Automated Assessment Evaluation in Learning Management Systems

Written by:

As an instructor, evaluating assignments of a few students is a rewarding experience. But it becomes overwhelming, when you teach over 20 students and you have 10 assignments to provide feedback. What if we can use an LLM to get some support now that its quite mainstream?

This is my presentation done as a part of Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) ‘s annual Showcase 2025. My talk was on the process of LLM based assessment evaluation system that can be embedded into learning management systems.

This system was built as a research project during my time as a Digital Learning Specialist at SAIT. The following is the high level process flow.

This presentation includes the problem statement, the thought process, brief on how LLMs and prompt engineering can be used to generate required responses, and how it has been used to implement an automated assessments evaluation within the Brightspace LMS by D2L. Includes an overview of the tech stack, and a demonstration as well.
